If you are currently taking methotrexate and your treatment is not providing the relief you need from the pain, stiffness, and swelling of your moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA), your doctor may suggest starting you on a biologic medication, such as SIMPONI ARIA®. It’s only natural to have questions and concerns about starting on a biologic medication.

Here are some important things you should know about treatment with SIMPONI ARIA®:


SIMPONI ARIA® is a biologic treatment for adults with moderate to severe RA, used with the medicine methotrexate. Methotrexate is taken as directed.

Is SIMPONI ARIA® right for me?

Only your doctor can decide if SIMPONI ARIA® is right for you. SIMPONI ARIA® can cause serious side effects. Please read the Medication Guide for SIMPONI ARIA® and discuss any symptoms or questions with your doctor.

What should I know about serious side effects?

SIMPONI ARIA® (golimumab) can lower your ability to fight infections. Serious and sometimes fatal events may occur. There have been reports of serious infections including tuberculosis (TB) and infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses that have spread throughout the body. Other possible serious side effects may include lymphoma, a rare and fatal cancer called hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, skin cancer, other cancers, hepatitis B, heart failure, nervous system problems, lupus-like syndrome or allergic reactions. What are the most common side effects?

The most common SIMPONI ARIA® side effects include:

  • upper respiratory infection (runny nose, sore throat, and hoarseness or laryngitis)
  • viral infections such as flu and cold sores in the mouth
  • bronchitis
  • high blood pressure
  • rash

How is SIMPONI ARIA® given?

SIMPONI ARIA® is prepared and given by your healthcare provider as a 30-minute infusion every 8 weeks after 2 starter doses, given 4 weeks apart. The infusion is given through a needle placed in your vein, usually in your arm.

How often do I receive SIMPONI ARIA®?

After 2 starter doses, 4 weeks apart, SIMPONI ARIA® is given by a healthcare professional once every 8 weeks - that’s as few as 6 infusions a year.

What if I miss a SIMPONI ARIA® infusion?

If you forget or miss an infusion appointment, make another appointment as soon as possible.

Can I take SIMPONI ARIA® if I’m taking other medications?

While taking SIMPONI ARIA® you may continue to use other medications that help treat your condition, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), prescription steroids, and pain relief medicines, as recommended by your doctor.

Be sure to tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking before starting SIMPONI ARIA®, or if you are scheduled to or recently received a vaccine. People receiving SIMPONI ARIA® should not receive live vaccines or treatment with a weakened bacteria (such as BCG for bladder cancer). Especially tell your doctor if you use ORENCIA®* (abatacept) or KINERET®* (anakinra). You should not receive SIMPONI ARIA® while you are also taking ORENCIA®* (abatacept) or KINERET®* (anakinra). Tell your doctor if you are taking other TNF-blocker medicines, including HUMIRA®* (adalimumab), ENBREL®* (etanercept), or CIMZIA®* (certolizumab pegol), or if you are taking RITUXAN®* (rituximab) or ACTEMRA®* (tocilizumab). Ask your doctor if you are not sure if your medicine is one listed above.
